Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders staged a protest outside the West Bengal Assembly on Thursday, demanding an urgent discussion on the recent violent clashes between police and miscreants in South 24 Parganas district.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari spearheaded the protest, insisting on a debate in the House and revealing that two adjournment motions had already been submitted on the issue. “We are seeking a serious discussion on the matter. This is not just about law and order; it concerns public safety and communal harmony,” Adhikari said in a video message.
Adhikari further informed that he had emailed the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Superintendent of Police in Diamond Harbour, requesting permission to visit the victims along with a fellow BJP MLA. “Our state party president will also attempt to visit the affected area. Let’s see how the police respond,” he added.
Referring to a previous High Court order regarding communal disturbances, Adhikari pointed out that in such cases, the court had empowered petitioners to seek central paramilitary assistance if local police failed to act. “I tried to meet the DGP, but sources told me that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee advised him against it,” he claimed.
Adhikari alleged that around 30 to 35 police personnel were injured during the violence and that five police vehicles were torched and vandalised. “Stones were hurled at the police. Shockingly, the police had to wave white flags to control the situation — it’s all recorded by the media,” he stated.
He also announced that “Sanatanis,” a reference to the Hindu community, would stage state-wide protests from 2 PM onwards to denounce the incident.
Earlier in the day, security was intensified in Rabindra Nagar, South 24 Parganas, following the eruption of the clashes.
